MGT-01-008H: The Grease Thief® Helicopter Sampling Kit contains eight (8) sampling sleeves that each contain: 1 Grease Thief Type 1 sampler, 1 spatula, 1 two-part GT Filler, and one shipping tube with label.
The Grease Thief™ sample fittings are used to obtain representative and repeatable samples from greased components found in helicopter drivetrains. This kit was designed specifically for Boeing to support a sampling program for the H-47 Chinook fleet, and is capable of representatively sampling the swashplates, hanger bearings and drive splines with minimal sample loss and effective quantitative transfer to the sampler.
Each sleeve includes a spatula to first scrape away dirty grease with the broader spoon-end, then the other narrow end is used to obtain 1 gram or more of representative grease. This is then loaded into the opened GT Filler funnel, and the GT Filler plunger is inserted. A Grease Thief is inserted into the GT Filler taper to be snugly held, and the grease is then extruded by depressing the plunger into the GT Filler funnel. Once the Grease Thief is filled, it is then removed from the GT Filler, and the open end is capped. The filled Grease Thief is then placed into the shipping tube and the barcode label is affixed to the tube.

When formerly employed with Boeing, now retired, I had engaged Rich and his team to allow Chinook operators to use the "grease thief" to capture grease from many rotor, drive and other grease point locations ( shaft splines, rotor head, bearings, etc) on the Chinook Helicopter at defined maintenance intervals. A carefully constructed sampling program used the GreaseThief to capture grease. We sought to to study and re-establish more precise intervals based on our sampling program where wearout/degradation over time was assessed. This was one of our last projects to fully redefine and substantiate through a tribology study (chemical analysis ) the helicopters scheduled maintenance program lube intervals. Led to reduced maintenance time especially for invasive tasks requiring significant disassembly/reassembly. The kit now has enhancements for grease capture, transfer, containment, instructions and labeling all aimed to improved quality controls to shipment time, identification and purity of sampling.
